DAP 510

Cambridge Parallel Processing

DAP 510 is a massively parallel computer that fits beneath a desk, ispowered from a standard outlet, and draws less than 750 watts.DAP 510 is programmed in FORTRAN with array extensions, and has five maincomponents:Host Connection Unit (HCU) -- Connects DAP 510 to its workstation host bySCSI interface. The HCU also incorporates an MC68020 32-bitmicroprocessor and two RS-232 serial ports.Master Control Unit (MCU) -- Takes instructions from the code memory andinterprets them, and then controls the array of processors and datatransfers.Array of Processor Elements -- The single-instruction, multiple data(SIMD) architecture of DAP 510 is based on 1024 single-bit processorelements (PEs) arranged as a two-dimensional array.Fast Data Channel -- An input/output channel into the DAP, operating ata transfer rate of 40 in, 40 out MB per second, concurrently withcomputation.Video Control Unit -- Drives a high-resolution color monitor at thefull rate of the Data Channel.
